Ward Leaves Net Again, Sparks Another Comeback
October 20, 2001

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 20) -- For the second time in three days, James Ward jettisoned his goalie shirt to spark a late comeback with two goals as Seattle Pacific University rallied from a three-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 men's soccer overtime tie with Incarnate Word Saturday night in the final game of the Crusader Classic.

Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague), who connected on the game-winner Thursday versus Saint Edwards, scored both of his goals in the final six minutes of regulation, including the equalizer with 24 seconds remaining. The Falcons scored all three of their goals in the final 5 minutes, 51 seconds.

David Smith (Fr., Corvallis, Or.) ignited the comeback with his team-leading sixth goal of the year in the 85th minute. Ward pulled SPU within 3-2 on his first goal 38 seconds later, at 84:47.

Neither team managed to score in the 30-minute, sudden-death overtime.

With the tie, Seattle Pacific (9-6-1) remains in the running for an NCAA Division II playoff berth with three games left.

Incarnate Word (8-8-1) took the lead early, scoring two minutes after the opening kickoff and adding another goal 41 seconds into the second half. The Crusaders led 3-0 after Ray Para's penalty kick past Ward in the 51st minute.

Grant Falco (Jr., Spokane, Wa./University) assisted on the Falcons' final two goals and now has 10 for the season. Ward, who came out of the net with 26:55 left in regulation, finished with six shots, including four on goal. Adrian Cravalho (Jr., Mililani, Hi.), who replaced Ward ing goal, made five saves in the final 57 minutes of regulation and overtime.
