BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Oct. 8) -- Bobby Schefter's
long-range blast and Jimmy Ward's solid goalkeeping combined to
earn 24th-ranked Seattle Pacific University a 1-0 win over Western
Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer
game Monday night at Civic Stadium.
The Falcons (2-1-0, 8-5-0), playing in
Bellingham for the first time in 11 years, snapped a two-game
losing skid and remained unbeaten (30-0-2) against the Vikings in
the last 32 meetings dating back to 1970.
The game's only goal came in the 26th minute.
Erik Skipper (Sr., Hillsboro, Or./Glencoe) collected a loose ball
and slipped it to Schefter, positioned 39 yards in front of the
Western net. Schefter took one touch and fired into the upper left
corner past keeper Darin Laier. It was Schefter's fourth goal of
the year.
Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague) made eight
saves?seven in the second half?to earn his second shutout. David
Hileman's 15-yard shot forced Ward to make a diving stop with 8
minutes remaining. The Vikings (1-1-0, 6-7-0) took 12 of their 16
