SEATTLE, Wa. (Oct. 6)-Three different players
scored goals as Seattle Pacific University moved into first place
in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference by defeating Western
Washington 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Interbay field. Seattle
Pacific (5-1, 6-6-1) began varsity play this year and has won its
last three games, including a 2-1 victory over Western (4-3,
5-7-0), Wednesday night in Bellingham.
Andrea Larsen (Sr., Portland, Or./Central
Catholic/Oklahoma State) opened up the scoring in the first half,
punching a Michelle Sanders (Fr., Centralia, Wa./Centralia) cross
past keeper Shaye Anderson from 10 yards out, (19:43). Larsen
figured into two of the Falcons' goals, assisting on the final.
Western Washington tied the game twenty minutes
after Larsen's opener as Kristin Whitlock beat Seattle Pacific
keeper Jennifer Hull (Fr., Eugene, Or./Sheldon) with a shot to the
left post just before intermission(43:22).
If the first half was a toss-up, the second
half belonged to the Falcons.
Seattle Pacific had successfully converted on
at least one corner kick in two of its last four matches. Saturday
afternoon was no different. At 67:59, Sanders corner-kicked from
the left side and lofted the ball into traffic at the far post,
where Erin Roberts (Jr., Issaquah, Wa., Issaquah/Montana) was
waiting. Roberts leapt into the air and headed the ball past
substitute keeper Kara Davis to give SPU a 2-1 lead.
Melissa Ellingson (Fr., Shoreline,
Wa./Shorewood) volleyed a right-side cross from LeRin Farrison
(Jr., Seattle, Wa., Mountain View/Highline CC) into the net for
insurance, with just nine minutes to play (81:05). Larsen was
credited on the assist on Ellingson's score as well.
Larsen leads Seattle Pacific with six goals on
the season. Sanders has assisted on half a dozen scores.
The Falcons continue with GNAC play in a
Tuesday afternoon match at Seattle University (3:00). The Redhawks
were picked in a preseason poll to win the conference.
