BELLINGHAM (Oct. 3)- Michelle Sanders scored a
pair of goals to lead Seattle Pacific University over Western
Washington 2-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer
match Wednesday night in Bellingham. The victory puts the Falcons
(4-1-0, 5-6-1) in a tie for first place in the conference with the
Vikings (4-2-0, 5-6-0) with seven games left to play. The two
teams will meet again in Seattle, Saturday afternoon.
Sanders (Fr., Centralia, Wa./Centralia) headed
in her first goal just over three minutes into the match off a
free kick from the left corner by Erin Roberts (Jr., Issaquah,
Wa./Issaquah/Montana).
Western's Mary Wellnitz popped in a penalty
kick just before intermission (37:45) to tie the score at half.
The second half belonged to the Falcons. At
81:10, Sanders struck again, this time on a corner kick. While
Andrea Larsen (Sr., Portland, Or./Central Catholic/Oklahoma State)
shadowed the Western goalie, Sanders curled the kick through the
keeper's hands and into the back of the net for the final margin.
Western Washington out shot the Falcons 17-10.
Sanders' scores were the first and second of her career.
Seattle Pacific keeper Jennifer Hull (Fr.,
Eugene, Or./Sheldon) was nearly flawless in goal, saving eight
shots.
There will be no more sharing of top honors;
Seattle Pacific and Western square off Saturday afternoon to
decide who will own first place in the GNAC. Kickoff is scheduled
for 4:00.
