SEATTLE (Oct. 2) -- A goal-starved Cal State
Bakersfield got an opportunistic early goal and some second-half
help from Seattle Pacific University's defense in snapping the No.
22-ranked Falcons' six-game men's soccer win streak with a 2-0
non-conference win Tuesday night at Interbay Stadium.
Kyle Gookins scored for the Roadrunners (6-7-0)
and also figured in an own goal by SPU (7-4-0), which was held
scoreless for the first time this season. Seattle Pacific had
scored 21 goals during the last six games while Cal State
Bakersfield was coming off two shutout losses.
After being pinned in their own end for much of
the first 20 minutes, the Roadrunners capitalized on their first
clear opportunity. A counterattack found Gookins angling across
the box. He beat SPU sweeper Matt Laughlin then hit a 16-yard shot
just inside the left post for his fifth goal of the season.
The Falcons forced the play at the outset. In
the 10th minute Max Leinbach's 25-yard chip required Wicks to
catch at the crossbar. Moments later, CSUB keeper Josh Wicks
flopped on a point-blank deflection by Joe Kinzel. In the 60th
minute, a Falco corner kick was nodded by Erik Skipper to the
upper right corner but Wicks managed to tip it over the bar.
Gookins played a role in Bakersfield's second
goal as well. With 23 minutes left, Lawrence Miscavish's breakaway
was broken-up by Mike Pardini's tackle.
On the resulting corner kick, Mark Melling's
cross went over Gookins's head but was inadvertently blocked into
the net by Kinzel.
Seattle Pacific finished with an 11-6 edge in
shots and 7-1 in corner kicks but a physical CSUB defense held
strong. Wicks made five saves to earn his third shutout. SPU
resumes Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday when it
hosts Seattle University at 7.
