Falco's Solo Effort Seals Falcons' 5th in a Row
September 25, 2001

SEATTLE (Sept. 25) -- Grant Falco set-up one goal and delivered the game-winner in a brilliant individual effort with less than 14 minutes remaining to push Seattle Pacific University to its fifth win in a row, 3-2 over San Francisco State in the rain at Interbay Stadium Tuesday night.

Brent Egbert (So., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) and Nathan Bringhurst (Fr., South Jordan, Ut./Bingham) also scored second-half goals for the Falcons (6-3-0), who have won nine straight at home dating back to last season. Mike Joyce had both goals for the Gators (3-6-0).

Seven minutes after Joyce's second goal knotted the score at 2-2, Falco (Jr., Spokane, Wa./University) began the decisive play 25 yards out on the right wing. He dribbled into right side of the box, beating one defender, and then from a difficult angle on along the endline, squeezed an 8-yard drive between SFSU keeper Jake Dickson and the near post.

Seattle Pacific, which had lost all three previous games in which it trailed at halftime, came back from an early 1-0 deficit on back-to-back goals by Egbert and Bringhurst in the 51st and 66th minutes. Egbert finished a cross from Bob Schefter (Sr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) for his third goal of the season. A Falco cross to Bringhurst for an 8-yard header put SPU in front, 2-1.

Joyce's second goal of the game had pulled the Gators back even in the 70th minute. Joyce, who had opened the scoring midway through the second half, beat Seattle Pacific goalie James Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague) from 15 yards after Chris Martinez found him wide-open on the right.

The Gators' best chance to tie the game came with 3:47 left. Joyce was wide open for a cross from Ajani Byrd but his 10-yard header was easily collected by Ward, standing on his line.

Seattle Pacific opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday at Western Washington.
