SEATTLE (Sept. 24) -- Unable to score for the
third time in four games, Seattle Pacific University fell to No.
3-ranked San Francisco State 2-0 in a non-conference women's
soccer game at Interbay Stadium Monday afternoon.
Alanna Bailey came off the bench in the first
half to score the game's first goal and Christina Quintero added a
late insurance tally to keep the Gators unbeaten (8-0-1). Kelly
Hoover made two saves and played the first 85 minutes of the
shutout, San Francisco State's fifth in a row and sixth of the
season.
The Falcons, who have lost four in a row,
including two to nationally-ranked teams, came out the aggressor.
They out-shot SFSU 7-2 in the first half.
However it was Bailey who, four minutes after
entering the match, broke the scoreless deadlock in the 25 the
minute. Streaking onto Carol McClintock's through ball, she beat
Seattle Pacific goalie Jennifer Hull (Fr., Eugene, Or./ Sheldon)
from 15 yards on the breakaway.
Seattle Pacific (3-6-1) nearly tied it five
minutes before halftime. Erin Roberts (Jr., Issaquah,
Wa./Issaquah) crossed to Andrea Larsen (Sr., Portland, Or./Central
Catholic) near the penalty spot but Larsen's right-footed drive
was steered wide of the left post by a diving Hoover.
San Francisco State had an 8-2 advantage in
second-half shots. Quintero took the ball off a defender and hit a
10-yard shot between Hull and the near post with 5 minutes, 42
seconds remaining.
SPU resumes Great Northwest Athletic Conference
play Saturday night when it hosts Western Oregon at 7.
