Smith Strikes in OT to Lift SPU to 4th Straight Win
September 22, 2001

SEATTLE (Sept. 22) -- David Smith scored in the 12th minute of sudden-death overtime to send Seattle Pacific University past UC Davis 3-2 in a non-conference men's soccer game played before an overflow crowd at Interbay Stadium Saturday night.

Bobby Schefter and Brent Egbert staked Seattle Pacific (5-3-0) to a 2-0 lead before the Aggies (5-3-1) scored twice in six minutes to send the match into extra time.

Smith delivered the Falcons' fourth straight victory with a 10-yard shot past UC Davis keeper Jason Kong with 2 minutes, 39 seconds left in the first overtime. Brent Egbert (So., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) and Mike Pardini (Jr., Pasco, Wa.) were credited with assists. It was Smith's second goal in as many games since recovering from a hamstring pull which sidelined him for the season's first six games.

Smith (Fr., Corvallis, Or.) had set-up the game's first goal, popping the ball over the head of defender, retrieving and then quickly turning and finding Schefter (Sr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) open 8 yards in front of the net, Schefter first-timed his shot under Kong and into the left corner.

Egbert made it 2-0 for SPU in the 71st minute, heading in Falco's long ball from 2 yards at the right post with Kong out of position

Shortly thereafter, Sean Buchanan began to rally the Aggies, converting a penalty kick at 72:18. It was Buchanan's third goal in the past two games.

Following two near-misses by the Falcons' Falco, Zak Matteoli of UC Davis found the upper right corner with a free kick from 22 yards, tying the score at 2-2 and sending it into overtime.

SPU finished with a 16-13 edge in shots and goalie James Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague) made four saves, including two diving stops of Buchanan and Matteoli. It was the Falcons' eighth win in nine meetings with Davis.

SPU resumes play Tuesday night when it hosts San Francisco State at Interbay.
