Falcons Blank No. 17 Sonoma State, 2-0
September 20, 2001

SEATTLE (Sept. 20) -- David Smith came off the bench to score in his first collegiate game and James Ward posted his first shutout, spurring Seattle Pacific University to its third men's soccer win in a row, 2-0 over 17th-ranked Sonoma State Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

Joe Kinzel (So., Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) added a second half-goal for the Falcons (4-3-0), who were playing their first home game following a two-week break because of postponements. Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague) made four saves, three of them in the second half.

Smith (Fr., Corvallis, Or.), who had missed the first six games with a pulled hamstring, opened the scoring 13 minutes after coming onto the field.

He ran onto Mike Pardini's long ball up the left wing, rounded one defender and poked the ball past the onrushing keeper from 12 yards.

Early in the second period Kinzel scored his third goal of the year by using his shoulder to deflect Bobby Schefter's (Sr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) cross into the net from 2 yards. Smith just missed scoring another goal, flicking his header just wide of the left post with 6 minutes remaining and missing an open net from 30 yards with 9 seconds left.

Sonoma State (5-2-1), which has not beaten SPU in 10 meetings, had two strong scoring opportunities, both in the second half. Brian Coyne clipped the top of the crossbar on a 22-yard free kick and Ryan Smith ripped a 20-yard shot which Ward parried wide with a diving save.

The Falcons, whose three losses were all to nationally-ranked teams, host UC Davis Saturday night and San Francisco State Tuesday before opening Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
