SEATTLE (Sept. 17) -- Leah Wiiest (Sr.,
Spokane/Deer Park/Cornell) led the Falcons with 21kills, 11 digs
and three blocks in a comeback that came up short, 32-30, 30-27,
14-30, 26-30, 16-14, versus Central Washington University in a
conference match Monday night at Brougham Pavilion. The Falcons
home win streak, dating back to Nov. 12, 1999, fell victim to the
Wildcats with the upset.
Despite a slow start, the Falcons (1-2, 8-3)
had a chance to take the lead in the match against a surging CWU
(3-0, 7-4) squad, but blew a game point and dropped the first
game. In the second game, hitter Leilani Kamahoahoa (Sr., Oregon
City, Or./Canby) left the game with a sprained knee and ankle.
That left the Falcons, already missing hitter
Cathleen Price (Fr., Gresham, Or./Sam Barlow) with a mild ankle
sprain, severely hampered on offense.
Although the Falcons went on to drop the second
game, Kamahoahoa's replacement, Yashmeen Knox (Fr., Coupeville,
Wa./Coupeville) helped lead a Falcon comeback in her first ever
collegiate match. SPU went on to win the next two games to force a
deciding fifth.
The Falcons carried the momentum from the
previous two games into the deciding fifth game. Up 14-12, the
Falcons dropped two consecutive match points before falling 14-16
to lose the match.
Carri Colvin (Fr., Brush Prairie, Wa./Prairie)
and Monica Abrahamson (Sr., Spokane, Wa./Rogers) joined Wiiest
with double-doubles. Colvin recorded 12 kills and 15 digs while
Abrahamson recorded 20 kills and 12 digs. Knox tied the team-high
with 15 digs.
The Falcons outmatched the Wildcats in every
statistical category, with the exception of serving. SPU recorded
17 service errors to just six for CWU. Carolyn Mires paced the
Wildcats with 17 kills and 10 digs.
Seattle Pacific will try to rebound in another
conference matchup this Thursday at Seattle University. The match
begins at 7 p.m.
