SEATTLE (Sept. 11) -- Tuesday night's women's
soccer game between Seattle Pacific University and Western
Washington has been postponed as a consequence of the catastrophic
events which occurred in the eastern United States earlier today.
Also under evaluation is the status of
Wednesday's scheduled men's soccer game versus Western in
Bellingham. A determination will be made by representatives of
both schools by 9 a.m. Wednesday.
"With the devastation brought on
American lives and property this morning, it is our greatest
desire to express compassion for fellow citizens who are
experiencing the loss of loved ones as a result of the terrorism,"
said SPU Athletic Director Tom Box. "Our country has been
attacked. We intend to convey a unity of spirit and national
resolve, but also be sensitive and prayerful for the human tragedy
which is taking place."
The NCAA has issued a statement regarding other
athletic contests in the coming days.
"The games themselves are
insignificant in the face of what has happened today, " said
Cedric Dempsey, NCAA president. "Our focus is entirely on the
safety of student-athletes, athletics personnel and fans. We urge
schools to make sound decisions about proceeding with contests
today and in the coming days." |
