SEATTLE (Sept. 8) -- Andrea Larsen and LeRin
Farrison each scored second-half goals as Seattle Pacific
University celebrated its inaugural women's soccer home game by
defeating Central Washington 2-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic
Conference game at Interbay Stadium Saturday night.
The Falcons (1-1-0/2-2-1), who began varsity
play this year, broke open a scoreless match with both goals
coming less than 10 minutes apart. In the 58th minute Larsen (Sr.,
Portland, Or./Central Catholic) put SPU in front to stay,
volleying a near post corner kick from Michelle Sanders (Fr.,
Centralia, Wa.) from 8 yards. It was Larsen's fourth goal of the
season and came on her team's first shot after intermission.
Farrison (Jr., Vancouver, Wa./Mountain
View-Highline CC) notched what proved to be the decisive goal in
the 68th minute. She took a left wing cross from Jessica Henson
(Fr., Spokane, Wa./University) and looped a 10-yard shot over
Wildcats keeper Emily
Barber for a 2-0 advantage. It was Farrison's
second goal of the year.
Central Washington's Kim Glusick (Jr.,
Silverdale, Wa./C. Kitsap) spoiled the shutout with 1:43 remaining
with an 18-yard drive to the lower left corner, past SPU goalie
Jennifer Hull (Fr., Eugene, Or./Sheldon).
Seattle Pacific, playing before a partisan
crowd of 450, was the aggressor beginning midway through the first
half and finished with a 22-8 advantage in shots and 6-0 in corner
kicks.
During halftime an auction of sports
memorabilia--including Seattle SuperSonic Desmond Mason's
basketball shoes and autographed jersey from U.S. National Team
stars Mia Hamm and Michelle Akers--raised over $2800 for the SPU
women's soccer scholarship fund.
Seattle Pacific hosts Western Washington in
another GNAC game Tuesday night at 7 at Interbay.
