POMONA, Calif. (Sept. 4) -- Joe Kinzel's first
two goals of the season sparked Seattle Pacific University to a
season-best offensive display as the Falcons defeated Cal Poly
Pomona 4-1 in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday at
Kellogg Field.
Michael Schefter (So., Yakima, Wa/West Valley)
and Grant Falco (Jr., Spokane, Wa./University) also scored as SPU
snapped a three-game losing string and beat the Broncos for the
ninth time in 10 meetings.
Seattle Pacific (2-3-0) struck early and
mounted a 3-0 lead before Cal Poly (0-3-1) answered. Kinzel (So.,
Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) scored the first of his goals in the
10th minute from 15 yards. Schefter notched his second goal of the
season at 36:45 on a lofted shot which caromed off the hand of CPP
goalie Barrett Williams. Falco headed in a cross from Andy Sather
(Fr., Liberty Lake, Wa./Ferris) in the 57th minute.
After the Broncos pulled goal goal back through
Cherif Guirguis, Kinzel added an insurance goal at 75:35 off an
assist by Falco.
James Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague) made two
saves to earn his second win of the season in goal. The Falcons
finished with a 10-7 edge in shots.
SPU, which had lost each of its games to teams
currently ranked in the NCAA Division II's top 12, completes the
California portion of its eight consecutive road games Thursday
night at UC San Diego.
