CARSON, Calif. (Sept. 1) -- Unable to hold a
precious lead in the final four minutes, 13th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University fell to top-ranked and defending NCAA Division
II champion Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-2 in overtime Saturday.
After Erik Skipper's (Sr., Hillsboro,
Or./Glencoe) penalty kick put SPU (1-3-0) in front, 2-1, with 4
minutes, 11 seconds remaining in regulation, the Toros rallied.
Victor Guerrero sent the game into overtime
with a penalty kick at 88:33. Chris Wimmer, off of a scramble
following a corner kick, then scored a sudden-death goal past
Seattle Pacific keeper James Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague) at
106:08, giving Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-0-0) its 17th straight
win.
It was a 1-1 tie with SPU last season which
preceded the win streak. The Toros, unbeaten in 27 games overall,
later eliminated Seattle Pacific in the first round of the
playoffs.
Dominguez Hills grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 4th
minute on Sean Lockhart's strike. The Falcons equalized shortly
after halftime when Brent Egbert (So., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome)
came off the bench for his first goal of the season at 48:48.
Skipper's score, which came after Manfredo Rendon (Fr.,
Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) was brought down in the box, was his third
in four games.
Ward made seven saves--three in the extra
period--to help offset the Toros' 23-7 advantage in shots.
The Falcons, who have now lost three in a row,
including a pair of overtime games to top-four teams this week,
are only halfway through eight consecutive road games to begin the
season. They play at Cal Poly Pomona Tuesday.
