PHOENIX (Aug. 27) -- Playing shorthanded for
the final 17 minutes of regulation and overtime, No. 13-ranked
Seattle Pacific University eventually succumbed to No. 4 Lewis
(Ill.) 2-1 in the championship game of the Antelope Classic Monday
night in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees at Hoy Stadium.
David Bruno of the Flyers connected from 14
yards in the 98th minute for the game-winner. Lewis (2-0-0), an
NCAA Division II semifinalist a year ago, finished with a 13-8
edge in shots.
Down by a goal, the Falcons (1-1-0) lost
defender Bobby Schefter (Sr., Yakima, Wa/West Valley) to a second
yellow card with 8:33 left in regulation. But Grant Falco (Jr.,
Spokane, Wa./University) latched on to a loose ball with 4:02
left, equalizing the score at 1-1 with a 6-yard shot.
Moments later, Joe Kinzel (So., Shoreline,
Wa./Shorewood) broke loose on the left flank only to be rushed
into shooting wide from 10 yards by Lewis goalie Jordan Gustman.
Lewis had taken an early lead in the 4th minute
when Serafin Vega's long free kick found Martin Strah for a
point-blank header past SPU keeper Adrian Cravalho (Jr., Mililani,
Hi.). James Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague), who had started in
goal in Friday's win over Grand Canyon, came off the bench and
played the majority of the match at forward.
Seattle Pacific continues its 8-game road trip
Wednesday night at Chico State. Forecasts call for a high of 98
that day.
