MIAMI (Aug. 25) --The Seattle Pacific
University volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday on the
final day of action at the Barry University Invitational at the
Health and Sports Center.
In the morning match, the Falcons defeated
Edinboro University in straight games, 30-27, 30-19, 30-9, before
falling to 14th ranked tournament host Barry University, 30-20,
28-30, 30-24, 30-26 in the evening finale.
The Fighting Scots of Edinboro University could
not keep pace with the Falcons (3-1) who increased their margin of
victory in each game. Leilani Kamahoahoa (Sr., Oregon City,
Or./Canby) displayed her versatility with an 11-kill, 11-dig
performance. Fellow senior Leah Wiiest (Sr., Spokane, Wa./Deer
Park/Cornell) dominated the net for the Falcons, finishing with a
team-high 15 kills and seven blocks.
The Falcons faced their young season's toughest
opponent yet in Barry University in the final game of the
tournament Saturday evening. SPU stole one game from the
Buccaneers and stayed close in each of the remaining three they
lost.
Freshman Cathleen Price (Fr., Gresham, Or./Sam
Barlow) continued to impress this season by leading the Falcons in
kills with 18. Wiiest came through with another stellar
performance, finishing with 15 kills, a team-high 17 digs and four
blocks.
SPU leaves Miami with a 3-1 overall record to
start the season. The Falcons return to their own gym this
Thursday for the SPU Invitational tourney, that lasts through
Saturday at Brougham Pavilion. SPU begins play against 6th ranked
Cal State LA at 7 p.m.
