INDIANAPOLIS (July 25) -- Karen Summers,
Seattle Pacific University's two-time All-America hurdler and
conference champion, was one of 58 women to receive an NCAA
postgraduate scholarship for winter and spring sports.
Summers, a senior from Bremerton, Wa., who
attended Seattle Christian High School, graduated last month with
a degree in exercise science and a grade point average of 3.73.
She won Pacific West Conference titles in the 100-meter dash, 400
hurdles and both relays this season and repeated as an All-America
in the hurdles, finishing sixth in the Division II championships.
The NCAA scholarship is for $5000.
A two-time academic all-conference selection,
Summers won the Northwest Women's Sports Foundation postgraduate
scholarship in May. She ranks No. 4 all-time in the hurdles and is
a member of three of the school's top five 4 x 100 and 4 x 400
relays.
Eight Seattle Pacific seniors have earned NCAA
postgraduate scholarships in the past five years, and the school
has had 13 winners since 1981.
The NCAA annually awards 174 postgraduate
scholarships to student-athletes who have excelled academically
and athletically and are in their last year of intercollegiate
athletics competition. |
