SEATTLE (May 12) -- Seattle Pacific
University's Cyrena Bell, Sarah Kraybill and 1600-meter relay all
improved their qualifying times as the track & field regular
season came to a close Saturday at the Ken Foreman Invitational.
Rachel Ross (Jr., Kennewick, Wa.) will enter
the NCAA Division II Championships with an unbeaten record this
season versus collegians after the Falcons' middle-distance ace
won the meet's 1500-meter run in 4 minutes, 31.56 seconds. Ross
ranks No. 4 in the nation in both events and the 800. She has won
five metric miles and four 800 races this spring.
Ross, Bell (Sr., Kent, Wa./Christian Faith),
Kraybill (So., Seattle, Wa./Ballard) and Karen Summers (Sr.,
Bremerton, Wa./Seattle Christian) combined to win the 1600 relay
in a season-best time of 3:47.53--the No. 8 qualifying time in
Div. II and No. 6 all-time at SPU.
Bell sprinted virtually unchallenged to her
third 400 win in the last four meets in a personal-best time of
56.35 seconds. Kraybill moved onto the provisional qualifying list
in the 800, taking third in 2:13.89--an improvement of nearly 2
seconds off her previous season-best..
Keysha Bayley of the Coquitlam (B.C.) Cheetahs
was the meet's only three-event winner. Bayley finished first in
the 100 (12.02), 200 (24.56) and long jump (18-11 1/4).
For the men, Western Oregon's Mike Hinshaw
bolted to victory in both the 100 (10.59) and 200 (21.72), and was
also a member of the Wolves winning 400 relay (41.48).
Washington's Olympic sprinter, Ja'Warren Hooker, breezed to a win
in the 400 (46.27) but was well off his school and meet record
(44.91) set a year ago.
The Seattle Pacific men had three PRs. Paul
Mach (Fr., Seattle, Wa./King's) ran the third-fastest 400 hurdles
time in school records (54.69), finishing third. Kelsey Backen
(Jr., Yakima, Wa./East Valley) moved to No. 4 in the 1500, taking
seventh in 3:56.01 and Neal Fryett (Jr., Pullman, Wa./Logos)
improved his best 800 time to 1:53.95.
Seattle Pacific's women will compete at the
NCAA Division II Championships May 24-26 in Edwardsville, Ill.
Washington will send its teams to the Pac-10 Championships, which
begin Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.
