The big event...
Rowing takes center stage on Seattle's sporting calendar
Saturday (May 5) when Seattle Pacific University's varsity
four crews join an international cast for the annual Widermere Cup
races on the Opening Day of boating season. Spectators along the
Montlake Cut, both on land and sea, could number nearly six
figures with good weather which, incidentally, is currently the
weekend forecast.
Cast and crews ready...
Racing begins at 10:20 with the men's varsity four starting
its 2000-meter course at 10:33 and the women at 10:35. The SPU men
will be represented by the novice four lineup and are pitted
against Washington and Oregon State while the women face two Husky
boats, Washington State and San Diego State, the team which edged
the Falcons for the regional title last week.
Regional champs...
One week after taking the conference women's title, Seattle
Pacific went to California and claimed two regional crowns. SPU
stroked to victory in the men's lightweight four and women's
novice light four categories at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing
Association Championships on Lake Natoma. The Falcons also got a
runner-up finish out of the women's varsity four while the men's
novice four took a bronze.
For the men's light four it was their third
straight victory, but it was a close one as conference rival
Pacific Lutheran finished less than a boat-length behind. The
women's light novice four remained unbeaten in three outings this
season, crossing the line with some open water on second-place UC
Santa Barbara. In the women's varsity four final, SPU went
bow-to-bow with San Diego State, coming in second by just 1
second.

to national regattas next week. The women's varsity four will
defend their title at the Avaya Communications Collegiate
Championships May 13 in Gainesville, Ga. The men's novice four
will row at the Dad Vail Championships May 11-12 in Philadelphia.
Jefferson noted that there is no national forum for women's light
fours...Jefferson noted that the men's novice four was a tired
bunch by the time racing was completed at Sacramento. Three rowers
were involved in four races due to their involvement in the light
four boat.
