BELLINGHAM (Apr. 7) -- Stephanie Huffman won
the javelin and long jump and placed third in two others events to
lead Seattle Pacific University to a repeat win in the Vernacchia
Invitational track & field meet Saturday at Civic Stadium.
The Falcons, who also got a meet record pole
vault from Ally Studer (Fr., Redmond, Wa./Redmond), won seven of
eight field events and finished with 133 points. Western
Washington placed second with 78 1/3, followed by Central
Washington (7), Pacific Lutheran (61 2/3), Simon Fraser (47),
Seattle University (7) and Saint Martin's (5).
Huffman (Jr., Brush Prairie, Wa./Prairie), who
has the top javelin throw in NCAA Division II, threw the spear 137
feet, 6 inches and leaped a season-best long jump of 17-11½.
She took third in the high jump (5-1¾) and 100-meter hurdles
(15.79 seconds).
Studer earned her first collegiate win by
clearing 11-5 ¾. Other field victories came from Natalie
Dorow (Sr., Billings, Mt.) in the triple jump (36-0¼), Abby
Harris (Sr., Auburn, Wa./Auburn) in the high jump (5-3), Lauren
Kooy (Fr., George, Wa./Quincy) in the discus (115-0) and Dionna
Anderson (Jr., Lynnwood, Wa./Edmonds-Woodway) with a personal-best
shot put of 42-2¼. Dorow has taken first in four of her five
meets this season.
Seattle Pacific swept the first five places in
the long jump.
Cyrena Bell (Sr., Kent, Wa./Christian Faith)
figured in all three racing wins for the Falcons. Bell won the 400
in 57.71 seconds and also took the baton for legs of the
victorious 4 x100 (48.4) and 4 x 400 (3:56.53) relays.
Karen Summers (Sr., Bremerton, Wa./Seattle
Christian), who also ran on those relays, was runner-up in the 100
(12.81), 200 (26.72) and 400 hurdles (1:03.61).
Sarah Kraybill (So., Seattle, Wa./Ballard)
placed second in the 800 in 2:16.42 and Ruth Hawkinson (Jr., Roy,
Wa./Yelm) ran a PR of 18:31.01 in the 5000 for second place.
Rachel Ross (Jr., Kennewick, Wa.) was held out of the meet by SPU
Coach Jack Hoyt to rest for next week's Meet of Champions in
Southern California. Ross has won six straight middle-distance
races and owns the fastest 1500 time in Div. II.
The men's top scorer was Kelsey Backen (Jr.,
Yakima, Wa./East Valley), who ran 1500 PR of 3:58.3 to edge
teammate Nathanael Castle (Jr., Gooding, Id.) who was runner-up in
3:58.4. Neal Fryett (Jr., Pullman, Wa./Logos) took second in the
800 in a PR of 1:55.09. The men, with 42 points, took fourth
behind Western (137), Central Washington (107), Pacific Lutheran
(64) and ahead of three other schools.
Western Washington sprinter Mike Lynch won the
100 and 200 and anchored he winning sprint relay to earn
outstanding male athlete of the meet. Simon Fraser's Jennifer
Padrino took women's honors with a meet-record hammer throw of
167-10--nearly 37 feet beyond the next competitor.
Hoyt will take a group of 8-12 athletes to the
Meet of Champions while the balance of the squads will compete in
Edmonds at the Northwest Relays Saturday. |
