Rough Waters in San Diego, Better News in Seattle for Rowers
April 7, 2001

SEATTLE (Apr. 7) -- Seattle Pacific University's rowers fared better in Seattle than San Diego as the men's and women's lightweight fours won their races at the Husky Invitational. Meanwhile, the women's varsity four finished sixth in its opening heat at the San Diego Crew Classic and its final heat was canceled due to stormy weather.

In the Montlake Cut, the Falcons sent four boats to the start line and three medaled. The SPU women's light four finished with open water on Willamette while the men's boat earned a one-length victory over the Bearcats for its second straight Husky Invitational crown.

The men's varsity four took third to a couple Washington crews and the J.V. eight was fourth.

Driving rain and strong winds caused a 6-hour delay in racing on San Diego's Mission Bay. When competition resumed at 4 p.m., race officials opted to cancel all but the remaining prelim heats and grand finals. The Cal Cup third final which SPU would have raced, was canceled along with the other non-championship heats.

The weather conditions contributed to the sinking of the shell used by the USC women's junior varsity eight. The boat took on water over the last half of the race but still managed to finish second before going down. Rowers jumped out of the shell and were brought to shore by rescue boats.

The Falcons, whose outside lane assignment made them more prone to the weather, managed to defeat Pacific Lutheran by a boat-length but 18 seconds behind winner North Carolina.

Seattle Pacific resumes racing Apr. 14 at the Governor's Cup regatta in Salem, Ore.
