EUGENE Ore. (Mar. 17) -- Rachel Ross continued
her assault on the Seattle Pacific University record for the
800-meters and Ally Studer smashed her own school pole vault mark
at the Oregon Preview track & field meet Saturday at Hayward
Field.
Ross (Jr., Kennewick, Wa.) ran a personal-best
time for the third meet in a row and won for the second straight
week in 2 minutes, 8.68 seconds, moving her up two places to No. 3
in school history. It was the fastest time in NCAA Division II
this season. Susie Griffith set the SPU record of 2:06.6 in 1977.
Ross, coming off a 2:09.76 in her first outdoor
race, finished about 20 meters in front of Oregon's Eri Macdonald,
who was timed in 2:11.49. It was the 11th 800 win of her career.
Studer (Fr., Redmond, Wa./Redmond), who had
broken the pole vault record in her debut two weeks ago, raised
the bar more than eight inches, to 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches. It was
the second-best clearance in Div. II. She took third behind the
Ducks' Holly Speight (12-5) and Becky Holliday (12-5).
The Falcons' Stephanie Huffman (Jr., Brush
Prairie, Wa./Prairie) took over the national lead in the javelin.
Huffman threw the spear a PR distance of 141-6 to finish fourth.
The 1999 NCAA runner-up in the heptathlon was third in the long
jump at 17-9 and sixth in the 100 hurdles (15.82).
In other events, Natalie Dorow (Jr., Billings,
Mt.) had her streak of outdoor triple jump wins stopped at four
meets, dating back to last season. Dorow, with a mark of 36-4, was
runner-up to Portland State's Wiyanna Kramer (36-9).
Jamie Witt (Fr., Folsom, Ca.) ran 11th in the
women's 3000 (10:10.56) and Abby Harris (Sr., Auburn, Wa.) cleared
5-4 1/4 in the high jump for third.
The men's team got a win from Kelsey Backen
(Jr., Yakima, Wa./East Valley) in the 1500 in 4:01.78. Backen came
back to take third in the 300 (8:42.29) while Nathanael Castle
(Jr., Gooding, Id.) was fifth (8:44.21). Freshman Paul Mach was
third in the 400 hurdles (55.63) and Trevor Sharp (Sr.,
Bala-Cynwyd, Pa.) fifth (58.07).
Seattle Pacific will send a few individuals to
the UC Davis Quadrangular next Saturday and resume activity as a
full team Mar. 31 at the Spring Break Open in Edmonds. |
