SEATTLE -- Gyongyver "Gus" Balogh,
the standout forward for Seattle Pacific University's
playoff-bound women's basketball team, was voted Pacific West
Conference player of the year and the Falcons' Gordy Presnell was
named coach of the year Monday.
Balogh, the 5-foot-11 Hungary native, averaged
18.0 points during the regular season as SPU went 23-4, won the
PacWest title and earned its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA
Division II tournament. She is the first-ever SPU player to earn
the award.
Balogh made the all-conference team for the
fourth year in a row, and earned the most votes of the coaches.
She is No. 2 in conference scoring, and also ranks among the
leaders in field goal, free throw and 3-point accuracy. Guard
Stephanie Urrutia (So., 5-9, Sunnyside, Wa.) was selected to the
second team.
Presnell earned coach of the year for the
fourth time since 1995. Despite losing two starters to injuries,
he guided Seattle Pacific to its third-highest win total and a no.
2 seed in this week's West Regional in Pomona, Ca. SPU will face
the winner of Thursday night's first-round game between Alaska
Fairbanks and Cal State Bakersfield. |
