19th-ranked Seattle Pacific University closed out its regular
season with a 68-39 win over Western Oregon in a Pacific West
Conference women's basketball game Saturday night at Brougham
Pavilion.
PacWest Champion Seattle Pacific, ranked No. 2
in the West Region, awaits tomorrow's NCAA tournament pairings.
The top two seeds in the region receive a first round bye in the
West Region March 8-10, at a site to be announced. Cal Poly Pomona
held the top spot in last week's poll.
Balogh (Sr., Szombathely, Hungary) scored seven
of her 15 points during a 12-2 Falcon run with 8:00 to play in the
first half. The Falcons went into the locker room at intermission
with a 34-19 advantage.
SPU led the entire second half as Urrutia (So.,
Sunnyside, Wa.) scored 13 of her 15 points. On the night, the
sophomore guard connected on five of nine shots including two of
three from beyond the three-point arc. Urrutia assisted on four
plays as well.
With just under three minutes to play in the
game, Liz Guppy (Sr., Beaverton, Or.) blocked a short jumper by
Western Oregon's Mandi Dinan and in doing so, surpassed Caroline
Pfiel (1886-90) on the school record list as career leader in
blocked shots. Guppy's four-year total is 214. The senior finished
the game with 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Seattle Pacific connected on 43.9 percent (25
of 57) of its shots compared to Western Oregon's 23.7 percent (14
of 59). The Falcons out-rebounded the Wolves 42-41.
The Falcons were aided by the return of point
guard Kerie Hughes (So., Mount Vernon, Wa.). Hughes sat out the
last eight games with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her
left knee. The sophomore assisted on three plays in the game.
Valerie Gustafson (Fr., Black Hills, Wa.) had 11 points and six
rebounds for SPU while Heather Laats and Mandi Dinal scored eight
