Shaken Western Michigan Edges Falcons' Team Record Score
February 28, 2001

SEATTLE (Feb. 28) -Western Michigan survived a major earthquake earlier in the day and a school-record performance by Seattle Pacific University to win a women's gymnastics dual meet at Brougham Pavilion Wednesday night.

The Broncos edged SPU in the final two events to score 194.025 points while the Falcons obliterated their old scoring record by more than a full point, scoring 193.700. The previous mark of 192.650 was set in 1998.

Several members of Western Michigan's team, visiting from Kalamazoo for two meets, found themselves on the Space Needle observation deck, 605 feet above the ground, during the 6.8-magnitude earthquake which struck the Pacific Northwest at 10:55 a.m. PST Wednesday. Coach Terry Casperson said she and the athletes sat down while the structure swayed back and forth.

Western Michigan pulled ahead after their third event, the floor exercise, and also outscored Seattle Pacific in the final rotation. The two teams were tied at 96.600 after two events.

Alison Siegel (Jr., Oakland, Ca.), Seattle Pacific's final performer on floor exercise, sprang to a score of 9.875. It won the event and tied for the second-highest in school history. Siegel, the top all-arounder with a four-event total of 38.500, was also runner-up on vault with a 9.725.

Cassie Althauser (Sr., Centralia, Wa.) of SPU won the balance beam with a career-high score of 9.850 and was third on bars with a season-high 9.775.

The Broncos' Amy DeYoung and Annmarie Adkins tied for first on bars with identical scores of 9.800. Amy Kinsey edged Siegel to win the vault with a 9.775.

The Falcons host UC Davis in their final home meet Friday night at 7. Western Michigan will compete Sunday afternoon at Washington.
