February 22, 2001

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE (Feb. 22) -- Brannon Stone scored eight of his 10 points in overtime and John Hubbard poured in a career-high 37 as 24th-ranked Seattle Pacific University won its eighth straight game, edging Humboldt State 91-88 in a Pacific West Conference game Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Stone (Jr., 6-7, Oak Harbor, Wa.) put the Falcons in front to stay, 85-82, with a 22-foot 3-pointer from the right side wit h3 minutes remaining. He then added three free throws in the final 27 seconds to help preserve his team's third 20-win season in a row.

Seattle Pacific (13-3, 20-4), which also defeated Central Washington in overtime last Saturday, remains one game behind Western Washington in the West Division with two games remaining. SPU hosts the Vikings Mar. 3.

Humboldt State trailed by four points with 17 seconds left in regulation but basket Austin Nichols scored a basket with 8 seconds to go and, following an SPU turnover on a 5-second call, equalised on Mark White's rebound 15-footer with 3 seconds left.

In the extra period, 10 of Seattle Pacific's 13 points came at the foul line, with Stone making 5 of 6 and Hubbard connecting on 5 of 8. The Lumberjacks' Isaac Gildea scored the game's final points on a trey with 2 seconds left.

Like SPU, Humboldt State (10-6, 19-6) is likely to earn an NCAA Division II playoff berth next month. The Lumberjacks have dropped 16 straight to the Falcons in the series. They were paced by the 24 points and 16 rebounds of Nichols while Gildea added 18.

Hubbard (Sr., 6-5, Inglewood, Ca.), who scored 24 of his points after halftime, made 12 of 21 shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers. He was 10 of 14 at the line.

Nick Johnson (Jr., 6-3, Burlington, Wa.) scored 18 points for Seattle Pacific, which is 56-2 in home conference games the past nine seasons. Jesse Keely (So., 6-7, Fircrest, Wa./Bellarmine) hauled down a career-high 12 rebounds and had eight points off the bench.

The second half of regulation was marked by big runs by both teams. A nine-point SPU lead was wiped out by 11 unanswered HSU points. The Falcons were behind by seven points going into the final six minutes but Hubbard helped fuel a 9-0 run to regain the lead. Johnson drilled a 3-pointer for a 76-74 edge with 49 seconds remaining and made two free throws with 17 seconds left before the 'Jacks' rallied.

SPU owned the lead for most of the first half before seeing it slip away amidst a series of turnovers. A 3-pointer by Hubbard pushed the Falcons in front 30-23 but the Lumberjacks responded with 10 straight points, including a pair of treys by Mark White.

The Falcons host Western Oregon Saturday at 7 while the Lumberjacks travel to Western Washington.
