Gus Balogh led three players in double figures,
scoring 25 points as Seattle Pacific University crushed winless
Western New Mexico 77-59 in a Pacific West Conference women's
basketball game Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion. The Falcons
(12-3, 17-3), winners of five straight and the last nine games,
jumped out to a 14-6 lead to start the first half.
With :27 to play before intermission, Brianne
Prescott canned one of her four treys on the evening to give
Seattle Pacific a 13 point lead, its biggest of the half.
Balogh (Sr., Szombathely, Hungary) netted 16 of
her game high 25 points in the first period, leading the Falcons
into the locker room with a 38-27 advantage.
Balogh connected on 11 of 17 attempts on the
night including two from beyond the arc, and had five rebounds and
as many assists.
The Falcons widened their lead to 25 twice in
the second half as Liz Guppy (Sr., Beaverton, Or./Westview) scored
ten of her 12 points in the latter period.
SPU got a scare mid way through the second half
as Stephanie Urrutia (So., Sunnyside, Wa.), starting at the point
guard slot for the injured Kerie Hughes (So., Mount Vernon, Wa.,)
went down with a twisted ankle. Over the last four games, Urrutia
has averaged 18.7 points.
The Falcons out rebounded the Mustangs 38-37,
and tallied 30 assists to Western New Mexico's (0-15, 0-20) 12.
The Mustangs turned the ball over 17 times.
The Falcons host a rematch of last year's NCAA
first-round playoff Saturday night (Feb. 10) in a meeting with
Montana State-Billings. The Yellowjackets defeated SPU a month ago
in Billings, 61-52. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00.
