Hot-Shooting Wolves Snap SPU Men's Streak at 4
January 25, 2001

Complete Box Score

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Jan. 25) -- Seattle Pacific University's four-game win streak was snapped by Western Oregon 84-81 as Jon Moehring scored 26 points, including a key breakaway dunk with 69 seconds left in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game Thursday night.

The Falcons (5-3, 12-4), who had won 10 of their last 11, were paced by the 21 points of Nick Johnson (Jr., 6-3, Burlington, Wa.) and the 18 of Brannon Stone (Jr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.). They had rallied from an 8-point deficit to knot the score with under 2 minutes remaining.

Western Oregon (5-3, 7-10), which had not beaten SPU in two years, broke away from a 76-all tie in the final 1 minute, 20 seconds. A 3-point play by Robert Day put the Wolves in front to stay, 79-76. A steal by Jay Glover set-up Moehring for a stuff and an 81-76 advantage 11 seconds later.

After Johnson's layup and free throw pulled Seattle Pacific back within two points, Stone missed two free throws with 24 seconds left and the Falcons did not get another chance at tying the game. Stone had entered the game shooting 85 percent from the foul line.

Moehring, a 6-8 senior, made 10 of 13 shots and the Wolves shot 58 percent (29-50) from the floor. Day contributed 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting and passed for six assists.

Seattle Pacific was 29-53 from the field but made just 48 percent in the second half. John Hubbard (Sr., 6-5, Inglewood, Ca.), the top SPU scorer, averaging over 19 points, was held to a season-low eight points and just nine shots. The first half featured a shootout , with each team hitting better than 60 percent from the field. The Falcons led by as many as six points but needed a Johnson trey to tie the score at 49-all at halftime.

The Wolves finished with a 28-22 edge in rebounds but committed four more turnovers (22-18).

Western Oregon never relinquished the lead in the second half, and went in front 66-58 with 10:25 to go on a Moehring layup.

SPU plays at No. 25-ranked Humboldt State Saturday night at 8.
