LACEY, Wash. (Jan. 20) -- John Hubbard
connected on all nine of his free throws and scored 19 points to
pace Seattle Pacific University as it won for the fourth straight
game and the 10th time in the last 11, beating Saint Martin's
63-51 in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game Saturday
night.
The Falcons (5-2, 12-3), now in a virtual tie
with Western Washington and Humboldt State atop the West Division
standings, held the Saints (2-5, 7-9) to a season-low total and
just 39-percent shooting.
Eric Sandrin (Jr., 6-10, Bothell,
Wa./Shorecrest) added 14 points and Nick Johnson (Jr., 6-3
Burlington, Wa.) 11 for Seattle Pacific, which pulled away in the
second half by hitting 10-20 field goals. Sandrin made 6 of 8
shots from the floor.
Hubbard (Sr., 6-5, Inglewood, Ca.), the No. 3
scorer in the conference, was just 4-13 from the floor, but hit
two 3-pointers and helped SPU out-score Saint Martin's 19-9 at the
foul line. The Falcons, who lead NCAA Division II in 3-point
accuracy, hitting 48 percent, were just 4-19 outside the arc and
shot a season-low 40 percent from the field (20-50).
Gerrit Eades was the only Saint to finish in
double figures, scoring 11 points.
It was Seattle Pacific's 15th win over the
Saints in the last 16 meetings. St. Martin's was coming off an
upset of nationally-ranked Western Washington Thursday but has now
lost four of its last five. SPU is back on the road next week,
beginning Thursday at Western Oregon.
