16th-Ranked Seattle Pacific Nipped by No. 19 Central
January 18, 2001

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE, Wa.-Jana Holme's 10 points led three Falcons in double figures, but Megan Kautzky's breakaway lay-up with just over 3:00 to play lifted 19th ranked Central Washington to a 67-55 victory over 16th ranked Seattle Pacific University in a women's basketball game Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Central Washington (7-2, 12-2) had not won in Brougham since 1988 and the 67-55 decision broke a Seattle Pacific 12-game home win-streak.

Central remains in at least at tie with Western Washington and Northwest Nazarene for first place in the PacWest Conference. SPU (6-3, 11-3) was picked to win the PacWest in a preseason coaches poll.

Central was out of the gates early, stretching the point margin 15-4, six minutes into the first half but the Falcons went on a 14-4 run at the 11-minute mark behind a pair of free-throws and a three-pointer by Gus Balogh (Sr., Szombatheley, Hungary).

The score hovered within two points the last five minutes before the halftime break. SPU went into the locker room at intermission with a 28-27 lead.

Holme (Sr., Tacoma, Wa./Wilson), Kerie Hughes (So., Mount Vernon, Wa.) and Brianne Prescott (Jr., San Jose, Ca./San Jose CC/Mitty) all scored 10 points apiece for SPU. Holme pulled down five of SPU's 34 rebounds. Central edged SPU on the boards, totaling 45 on the night.

The Wildcats out shot Seattle Pacific, connecting on 40.7 percent to the Falcons' 33.3 percent. Both teams tallied 22 turnovers.

Kautzky finished the night with 14 points and six assists. The point guard was a perfect eight of eight from the free-throw line. Rose Shaw led all scorers with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Seattle Pacific returns to Brougham Saturday night for a game against Saint Martin's. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00.
