SEATTLE, Wa.-Jana Holme's 10 points led three
Falcons in double figures, but Megan Kautzky's breakaway lay-up
with just over 3:00 to play lifted 19th ranked Central Washington
to a 67-55 victory over 16th ranked Seattle Pacific University in
a women's basketball game Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.
Central Washington (7-2, 12-2) had not won in
Brougham since 1988 and the 67-55 decision broke a Seattle Pacific
12-game home win-streak.
Central remains in at least at tie with Western
Washington and Northwest Nazarene for first place in the PacWest
Conference. SPU (6-3, 11-3) was picked to win the PacWest in a
preseason coaches poll.
Central was out of the gates early, stretching
the point margin 15-4, six minutes into the first half but the
Falcons went on a 14-4 run at the 11-minute mark behind a pair of
free-throws and a three-pointer by Gus Balogh (Sr., Szombatheley,
Hungary).
The score hovered within two points the last
five minutes before the halftime break. SPU went into the locker
room at intermission with a 28-27 lead.
Holme (Sr., Tacoma, Wa./Wilson), Kerie Hughes
(So., Mount Vernon, Wa.) and Brianne Prescott (Jr., San Jose,
Ca./San Jose CC/Mitty) all scored 10 points apiece for SPU. Holme
pulled down five of SPU's 34 rebounds. Central edged SPU on the
boards, totaling 45 on the night.
The Wildcats out shot Seattle Pacific,
connecting on 40.7 percent to the Falcons' 33.3 percent. Both
teams tallied 22 turnovers.
Kautzky finished the night with 14 points and
six assists. The point guard was a perfect eight of eight from the
free-throw line. Rose Shaw led all scorers with 19 points and 13
rebounds.
Seattle Pacific returns to Brougham Saturday
night for a game against Saint Martin's. Tip-off is scheduled for
7:00.
