SEATTLE, Wa.-Gus Balogh scored 17 points and
Liz Guppy had 15 as 19th-ranked Seattle Pacific University downed
Alaska Fairbanks 75-73 in a women's basketball game Saturday night
at Brougham Pavilion. With the victory, the Falcons (6-2, 11-2)
will move into at least a tie for first place in the Pacific West
Conference. SPU has won 12 straight at home.
With 14.7 seconds remaining and the Falcons up
72-71, point guard Kerie Hughes drove to the basket and converted
on a lay-up to put Seattle Pacific up 74-71. The Nanooks missed
the ensuing three-point attempt and fouled Balogh on the rebound.
The senior sank one of two free throws to put the Falcons up
75-71.
Balogh (Sr., Szombathely, Hungary) finished the
night with six rebounds and three assists to go with her team-high
point total while Hughes (So., Mount Vernon, Wa) assisted on five
plays and was four of seven from the field.
Guppy (Sr., Beaverton, Or./Westview) was six of
10 from the field, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked a pair
of shots in the contest. Stephanie Urrutia (So., Sunnyside, Wa.)
had her first career double-double, scoring 13 points and yanking
down 10 rebounds.
The Falcons out-rebounded Fairbanks 39-38 and
connected on 46 percent of their shots to the Nanooks' 38 percent.
Denise Perez led the Nanooks and all scorers with 21 points.
Seattle Pacific returns to the court next
Thursday in a 7:00 meeting with nationally ranked Central
Washington.
