SEATTLE (Jan. 11) -- John Hubbard, coming off
the bench for the first time this season, scored 21 points and
Nick Johnson scored all 12 of his points in the first half as
Seattle Pacific University cruised past Seattle University 84-55
in a Pacific West Conference game Thursday night at Brougham
Pavilion.
The Falcons, who evened their conference record
at 2-2 and went to 9-3 overall, used a revamped starting lineup to
get off to a strong start and never look back. They put together a
17-3 run midway through the first period to take a 29-11 lead.
Hubbard (Sr., 6-5, Inglewood, Ca.), the team's
top scorer this season, entered the game and promptly scored nine
straight points during the outburst. Meanwhile the Redhawks (2-3,
5-9), who have not beaten SPU in the last eight meetings, dating
back to 1995, went 5 minutes with only one field goal.
After the bulge grew to 21 points (35-14),
Seattle U. never got closer than 13 the rest of the way. It marked
the first time the two schools had ever met in a
conference-counting game in 70 meetings going back to 1944.
The Redhawks committed 13 first-half turnovers,
shot 35 percent overall and were out-rebounded 46-24. Seattle
Pacific, the top 3-point shooting team in NCAA Division II, hit
6-9 treys and shot 50 percent from the field (28-56).
Hubbard, who played just 17 minutes, finished
7-9 from the field while shooting mostly from the perimeter. Eric
Sandrin (Jr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) had 12 points and
nine rebounds. Brannon Stone (Jr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.), like
Hubbard, began the game on the sidelines but finished with 11
points in 16 minutes.
Johnson (Jr., 6-3, Burlington,
Wa./Burlington-Edison) had eight of his points in the final 8
minutes of the opening period.
Nicholas Crespinel led Seattle U. with 16, 11
coming in the first half, and Jeff Nelson added 14.
SPU hosts Northwest Nazarene Saturday at 7
while Seattle U. visits Western Washington.
