HONOLULU (Jan. 6) -- Despite a career-high 30
points from forward John Hubbard, No. 15 Seattle Pacific
University saw its six-game win streak snapped by Chaminade,
103-96 Saturday night in a Pacific West Conference game.
The Silverswords' C.J. Cowgill scored 23 of his
39 points in the second half to thwart a comeback by the Falcons
(1-2, 8-3), who trailed by 15 points at halftime.
Seattle Pacific gave up more than 100 points
for the first time in 28 games, with Chaminade (1-1, 7-5) shooting
56 percent from the field while taking 48 trips to the foul line,
making 40. Cowgill, a 6-1 senior, made 19 of his 21 free throws,
including 14-15 in the second half.
Hubbard (Sr., 6-5, Inglewood, Ca.), who played
just 14 minutes after intermission and 26 altogether due to foul
trouble, led a barrage of eight SPU 3-pointers in the second
period as the Falcons battled back. He was one of four players who
fouled out.
Eric Sandrin (Jr., 6-10, Bothell,
Wa./Shorecrest), Abe Fox (Jr., 6-8, Port Townsend, Wa.) and
Darrell Walker (Sr., 6-0, Marysville, Wa.) also picked up five
personals. Sandrin scored 17 points in his 20 minutes.
Brannon Stone (Jr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.), who
had four fouls, finished with 21 points, six rebounds and four
steals.
Drew Robinson contributed 16 points and eight
boards for Chaminade, which has won seven of its last eight since
dropping its first three outings to Division I teams at the Maui
Invitational. The Silverswords out-rebounded SPU 37-32. In the
first 20 minutes SPU, which leads the PacWest in field-goal
percentage, shooting 54 percent as a team, was just 10-30 from the
field and trailed 44-29 at the break.
The Falcons, who had not lost since Nov. 30,
