SEATTLE (Dec. 29) -- Brannon Stone hit all
eight of his shots from the field and scored 12 of his 22 points
in the second half as 15th-ranked Seattle Pacific University
handed Puget Sound its first defeat, 76-60 in the first round of
the Oak Harbor Freight Lines Holiday Classic Friday night at
Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (7-2) opened the second half with a
19-5 run to blow open a close game and win their fifth straight.
Center Eric Sandrin (Jr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) scored
seven points during that spree, and added 17 points and 10
rebounds while the SPU defense held the Loggers (6-1) to 36
percent shooting.
Seattle Pacific's game Saturday (Dec. 30) has
been canceled. It had originally been scheduled to meet Harding
University but that team was unable to make the trip from Arkansas
due to severe ice storms. Portland's Warner Pacific, an NAIA
member, agreed Thursday to replace Harding in the tournament but
the Falcons must fill the open date with an NCAA Division II
member to remain eligible for postseason selection.
Central Washington will face Puget Sound in the
only remaining second-round game at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Stone (Jr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) ignited the
second-half onslaught with a 3-pointer from the top of the key and
later gave SPU a 52-32 advantage on a dunk. The gap widened to as
much as 25 points, at 73-48, with just under 6 minutes remaining.
Stone, who made four treys altogether, also added four blocked
shots, four assists and five rebounds.
Puget Sound was paced by the 14 points apiece
of Jeff Carlson and Matt Scarlett.
In the first game of the tournament Friday, The
Son's Blue Angeles edged Central Washington 102-100 in an
exhibition behind the 19 points of Jeff McBroom and Justin White.
Justin Thompson of the Wildcats topped all players with 28 points.
