Mattice Ignites Coyotes Down Stretch in Defeat of SPU

SEATTLE (Nov. 17) -- Chris Mattice scored nine of his 14 points in the final six minutes as No. 22-ranked Cal State San Bernardino handed No. 17 Seattle Pacific University an 86-82 opening night loss in the first round of the Vitamilk Tip-Off Classic Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Mattice, a 6-1 senior, connected on a three-pointer from the right side to put the Coyotes ahead for good, 70-68, with 5:18 remaining. Two possessions later his driving reverse layup made it 74-71. Mattice then hit all four of his free throws in the final minute.

Eric Sandrin (Jr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) of Seattle Pacific led all scorers with 21 points while Darell Walker (Sr., 6-0, Marysville, Wa./M-P-Eastern Washington) and Nick Johnson (Jr., 6-3, Burlington, Wa./Burlington-Edison) added 17 apiece. Johnson made five treys and Walker four and SPU totaled 12 as a team.

San Bernardino was paced by the 16 of Glenn Summerall. Bobby Burries had 14 and Michael Edwards 13.

The Coyotes led much of the game but a flurry of treys by the Falcons repeatedly brought them back.Walker gave SPU its final lead of 67-65 with 6:23 left. Seattle Pacific missed four of seven foul shots in the last six minutes. San Bernardino faces Seattle University at 5 Saturday. SPU plays Simon Fraser in an exhibition at 7.
