Leep's Late Hoop Sends Huskies Past Falcons in Overtime, 83-81
November 10, 2000

SEATTLE (Nov. 10) Grant Leep's turnaround 12-footer and free throw with 34 seconds remaining sent Washington to an 83-81 overtime win over Seattle Pacific University in a preseason exhibition basketball game played before a record Brougham Pavilion throng of 2782 Friday night.

The Falcons, ranked 17th in the NCAA Division II coaches preseason poll and national semifinalists last season, had taken a four-point lead into the final 2 minutes, 30 seconds. But Curtis Allen cut away at the deficit with two free throws, and then Leep followed with his three-point play.

SPU had two shots in the final 6 seconds to either go ahead or tie. Brannon Stone's three-point attempt missed to the right and Daniel Sandrin's put-back try at the buzzer was just long from 8 feet.

John Hubbard of Seattle Pacific led all scorers with 26 points while Stone added 21 and 11 rebounds.

Will Perkins (Sr., 6-8, Omaha, Ne.) and Greg Clark (Sr., 6-7, San Diego, Ca.) of the Huskies had 17 apiece. Leep (Jr., 6-7, Mount Vernon, Wa.), who was fouled by Abe Fox on his shot, finished with seven point off the bench.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since the 1981-82 season, the first time the Falcons have hosted a game in 10 meetings.

Seattle Pacific took its largest lead at 53-47 4:15 into the second period. Stone (Jr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) capped a 13-4 run with a 12-footer in the lane. Washington responded with a 17-5 spurt for a 69-62 advantage.

Hubbard (Sr., 6-5, Inglewood, Ca.) scored the final five point of regulation, hitting two of four free throws before draining a 22-foot trey from the left angle with 28 seconds to go for a 75-all tie. Hubbard hit 7-13 shots, including 4-10 treys.

The Huskies shot 46 percent from the field (27-59) compared to 39 percent (25-65) for SPU. The Falcons finished with a slight edge in rebounds, 42-40.

Nick Johnson (Jr., 6-3, Burlington Wa./Burlington-Edison) added 14 points and Eric Sandrin (Jr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa.) scored 10 points before fouling out in his SPU debut since transferring from Portland.

David Dixon (Jr., 6-1, Houston, Tx.) and Marlon Shelton (Jr. 6-10, Rochester, Mi.) scored 10 each for the UW.

SPU opens the regular season by hosting No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino Friday night in the first round of the Vitamilk Tip-Off Classic at the pavilion. Washington plays Brewster Packing in another exhibition Tuesday night at 7 in Brougham.
