NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (July 1) -- Laura Widman's
bid to compete at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials will
have to wait until 2004 after the Seattle Pacific University
sophomore fell short of the heptathlon qualifying standard at the
Northridge multiple event meet Saturday.
Widman moved up from fourth to second place on
the second day, finishing with 5372 points--five fewer than her
career best. Christie McGihon won with a seven-event total of 5499
and Purdue's Beth Reed was third with 5192.
Needing at least a 19-foot long jump to put her
within striking distance of the qualifying standard of 5575,
Widman could only summon a mark of 18-4 1/2. She threw the javelin
120 feet, 9 inches and finished by running the 800 meters in
2:2151.
Widman, who took second at the NCAA Division II
Championships, had hit personal best marks in the 100 hurdles and
200 Friday. |
