SEATTLE (June 2) -- Ken Foreman, who retires
this month following more than 40 years at Seattle Pacific
University, has been named by the U.S. Track Coaches Association
as the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.
Foreman, who removed himself as head coach a
year ago to remain as an assistant to Jack Hoyt this season, will
begin coaching the boys cross country and track teams at Konawaena
High School in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in August. His wife Denise
will serve as girls head coach. Foreman has coached track &
field for 52 years.
Since beginning the first of his three stints
as SPU coach in 1950, Foreman produced 27 collegiate champions and
162 All-America athletes, including two this season. Eight of his
women's teams finished among the top 10 nationally.
The USTCA also considered Foreman's 10 national
team head coaching assignments, including the 1980 Olympics, 1983
World Championships and 1986 Goodwill Games. He also published
several books and produced instructional videos on coaching track
& field and running marathons.
Earlier Foreman had been named West Region
coach of the year for the second time in four seasons.
