Seattle Pacific's Foreman Goes Out as National Coach of the Year
June 2, 2000

SEATTLE (June 2) -- Ken Foreman, who retires this month following more than 40 years at Seattle Pacific University, has been named by the U.S. Track Coaches Association as the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.

Foreman, who removed himself as head coach a year ago to remain as an assistant to Jack Hoyt this season, will begin coaching the boys cross country and track teams at Konawaena High School in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in August. His wife Denise will serve as girls head coach. Foreman has coached track & field for 52 years.

Since beginning the first of his three stints as SPU coach in 1950, Foreman produced 27 collegiate champions and 162 All-America athletes, including two this season. Eight of his women's teams finished among the top 10 nationally.

The USTCA also considered Foreman's 10 national team head coaching assignments, including the 1980 Olympics, 1983 World Championships and 1986 Goodwill Games. He also published several books and produced instructional videos on coaching track & field and running marathons.

Earlier Foreman had been named West Region coach of the year for the second time in four seasons.
