SEATTLE (Mar. 10) --John Hubbard came off the
bench to score 20 points and Donte Quinine added 16 as Seattle
Pacific University ground out a 68-61 win over UC Davis in the
semifinal round of the NCAA Division II West Regional playoffs
Friday night before a near-capacity crowd at Brougham Pavilion.
The 10th-ranked Falcons (25-4) will meet No. 22
Central Washington for the regional title and a berth in the NCAA
Elite Eight Saturday at 7. Less than 900 tickets remain, and will
go on sale at 1 p.m. Saturday at the pavilion box office.
It was the second year in a row and the third
time in five years that SPU has eliminated the Aggies (22-7) in
the regional tournament.
Seattle Pacific, playing its first home playoff
game in 35 years, led from the opening minutes, and led by as many
as 14 points midway through the second period.
The Aggies sliced the lead to 57-52 with just
under 3 minutes left, but Quinine dunked off an interior feed from
Nick Johnson. UC Davis got no closer than five points again until
the waning seconds.
"It was a great win," said SPU
Coach Ken Bone. "I'm ecstatic to win the first game; that's
sometimes the most difficult game for a team."
"I expect an all-out war," said
Bone of the impending matchup with Central Washington. "It
ought to be a very physical game."
The two teams met three times in the regular
season with the Wildcats winning twice, including once in
Brougham.
Jason Cox led UC Davis 15 and Scott Darmstadt
had 13 and eight rebounds. The Aggies shot just 32 percent from
the floor, including 25 percent (8-32) in the first half.
Seattle Pacific was just 6-23 from three-point
range but hit 45 percent overall. The Falcons made 20-25 free
throws, with Ryan Skogstad going 7-8. Brannon Stone blocked five
shots.
SPU built an 11-point lead at intermission by
putting together an 11-2 run in the final seven minutes of the
half. Back-to-back close-range jumpers by Quinine pushed the
Falcons in front 25-19. Stone later added a foul line jumper and
two free throws.
