SEATTLE (Mar. 9) -- Jason Cox scored 18 points
and Dominic Callori hit four free throws in the final 15 seconds
as 22nd-ranked UC Davis defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii 60-53 in the
opening round of the NCAA Division II West Regional men's
basketball playoffs Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.
The Aggies (22-6) advance to Friday's semifinal
and face top-seeded and host Seattle Pacific (24-4) at 7:30. The
Seasiders, making their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance,
finished 19-9.
UC Davis never trailed after the first 11
minutes. However, BYU-Hawaii rallied with back-to-back
three-pointers by Thomas Joyce which cut the margin to 56-53 with
47 seconds to go. The Seasiders had two opportunities to tie the
game, and missed three shots altogether before Callori rebounded
and was fouled.
Callori scored the game's final four points
from the foul line and finished with 12 points. Cox, who scored 11
of his points in the first half, also had 11 rebounds as the
Aggies controlled the boards, 42-30.
BYU-Hawaii's David Evans, the nations top
scorer, averaging over 28 points per game, finished with 19. Evans
had suffered an ankle injury in Thursday's practice. Joyce
finished with 15.
