Version of This Release
SEATTLE (Jan. 24) There should be plenty
of Falcon Legends on hand to welcome the new inductees Feb. 2 at
the annual luncheon on Seattle Pacific University campus.
To date, six members of the Falcon Legends Hall
of Fame are confirmed to attend the ceremonies in Upper Gwinn
Commons. The deadline for reservations is Friday, Jan. 26. Tickets
are $30 and can be made by phone at (206) 281-2085. The luncheon
begins Feb. 2 at 11:45.
Dr. Ken Foreman, an '03 inductee and charter
member, has been selected to make a presenting speech for the
fourth time. Foreman will introduce his former track and field
star and 1987 NCAA heptathlon champion Anita Sartin Behrbaum.
Doris Heritage, another '03 charter inductee,
will deliver the invocation. Also expected to attend are Legends
Steve Gough ('03), Debbie Halle Jackson ('04), Bob Thompson ('04)
and Dr. Wes Lingren ('05).
Completing the Class of 2007 are former
wrestling coach Frank Furtado (1965-74), basketball All-American
Linda Johnson Cooper (1985-89) and the late Orville Anderson
(1956-59), a basketball great from 1955-59. In addition, former
SPU board of trustees chairman V.O. "Bud" McDole will
receive the fourth Lifetime Achievement Award.
Cliff McCrath, the SPU men's soccer coach, will
serve as Master of Ceremonies. Dr. Philip Eaton, SPU president,
will bestow inductees with their awards. Honorees will also be
publicly acknowledged prior to the homecoming basketball game the
next day in Brougham Pavilion.
Furtado is best known as the longtime trainer
for the Seattle SuperSonics, yet he was an accomplished coach
beforehand. He started the varsity wrestling program and was its
only coach, finishing with dual meet record of 89-64. Five of
Furtado's teams finished among top 20 nationally, including two in
the top 10. He had 11 All-Americans, with two advancing to the
NCAA championship match. Furtado who resides near the SPU campus,
will be presented by theology professor Dr. Bob Drovdahl, a past
wrestler.
Gordy Brockman, a former Falcon and player for
Anderson at Port Orchard's South Kitsap High School, will deliver
Anderson's introduction. After averaging 23.2 points and 11.8
rebounds as a senior, Anderson earned honorable mention
All-America. He holds the single game rebounding record (25) and
graduated as season and career record holder as well (now No. 4 in
career and No. 7 for season). Anderson is still No. 8 in career
scoring (14.2 points per game). A longtime educator and coach, he
passed away June 24. Accepting his award will be his wife Phyllis,
a Kent resident, and his two sons and daughters.
Johnson Cooper was the women's program's first
All-America, the conference player of the year and a three-time
all-conference pick. Nels Hawkinson, who recruited Johnson out of
Oak Harbor High School and coached her first two seasons, will
present her to the Hall. She averaged 17.5 points over her career
and her total of 1842 is a career record. She is also No. 2 in
career rebounding (8.6) and steals (2.7). Johnson was a member of
the first team to reach postseason and win 20-plus (24-6) games in
1989. She lives in Olympia and her husband, Keith Cooper, is the
Saint Martin's men's head coach.
Sartin Behrbaum restarted the Falcons'
tradition of champions in multiple events. She was an All-American
as a junior, then NCAA heptathlon champion as a senior. Explosive
as both a thrower and sprinter, Sartin Berhbaum graduated as the
SPU record-holder in 100, 200, 100 hurdles, javelin and
heptathlon, with 200, javelin and heptathlon still standing. She
went on to represent the U.S. in several international meets.
Sartin Behrbaum, a graduate of Foster High School in Tukwila, now
lives in Auburn.
McDole, an SPU alumnus and retired IBM
executive, was the inaugural president of the Falcon Club booster
organization. He has cheered and supported SPU athletes, coaches
and teams for more than five decades. As board chairman, McDole
was also instrumental in helping achieve a major PE and athletics
expansion, including the renovation of Brougham Pavilion.
The Class of 2007 will bring the Falcon Legends
Hall of Fame membership to 24. Nominations are being accepted for
next year's class.
