Anti-Virus Protection Note: Antivirus software is a requirement for all computers (University and personally owned) that are connected to the SPU network. Any computer that does not have current, recognized anti-virus software will be denied access to the SPU computer network.
Anti-virus software is software that runs in the background on your computer scanning files that are accessed for virus activity. When a virus is found the software blocks access to the file and prompts the user if the file should be cleaned or deleted. Virus infections are extremely common, though safe computing practices can do much to ensure your safety.
SPU has purchased a license for current SPU faculty, staff and students to have access to the corporate version of McAfee Anti-Virus. This is available as a free download from the SPU Download Center. Once installed the software will continue to download updated virus definitions automatically without annual subscriptions. Additional information regarding McAfee Anti-Virus is available at the McAfee product site.
If you are unable to get the software from the SPU Download Center, a small number of copies are available from the CIS Help Desk.
Note: While the University has selected McAfee Anti-Virus as our campus standard, and have provided a license for it to be installed at no charge; students are able to use a broad range of similar anti-virus software applications as long as the product is up-to-date with the latest versions and virus definitions.
How To
Download McAfee Anti-Virus Enterprise Edition:
Current versions of McAfee Virus Scan can be downloaded from the download center at SPU Download Center . You will be required to enter your SPU Username and password to gain access to this site.
Login to the SPU Download Center is restricted to current SPU faculty, staff and students who are currently enrolled in classes for an SPU degree program.
Common Problems
Multiple Software Installations:
You must uninstall any previous anti-virus software before installing McAfee enterprise. Failure to do so will result in your computer running extremely slowly as files are double scanned.
To uninstall software go to the Windows Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and select your unwanted software from the list. Click the remove button that appears to the right of your selection. This will launch the removal wizard and walk you through the uninstall process.
