Video Conferencing

  • What Is It?

Video Conferencing

SPU has limited video conferencing capability. There are currently two areas on campus with video conferencing equipment. Some classrooms in the Science Building can be configured with this capability, or the CIS Conference Room has a video conferencing station that can be arranged for individuals or small groups.

Video conferencing allows two or more sites to join with both audio and video communications. The SPU conferencing equipment includes Polycom "IP only" video conferencing stations. If the remote site is also an IP-based system, the two conferencing stations are able to connect directly. If the remote site is using ISDN-based equipment, a conferencing bridge must be scheduled to allow the analog and digital systems to communicate. If more than two locations want to participate in a video conference, a conference bridge must also be scheduled.

SPU is a member of the K-20 Washington State Educational Network . Many K-20 member colleges, universities, school districts, individual schools, and libraries have video conferencing capability. The K-20 network also provides the conferencing bridge equipment to allow mis-matched systems to connect and to allow multiple sites to participate in the same video conference.

  • How To

Scheduling:
Currently, SPU video conferencing requires setup coordination and testing. Contact the CIS Helpdesk and you will be routed to the appropriate staff member for assistance (or contact Dave Tindall, (206)281-2239 or dtindall@spu.edu). Please allow several days before your scheduled event to make sure the appropriate configuration and setup is available.

  • Common Problems

There are several types of video conferencing equipment. Some of the older equipment uses ISDN telephone circuits to provide the network capability to connect to other locations. Newer equipment is IP-based. There are still speed and capability issues when mixing various types of equipment. It's always a good idea to schedule a "test run" prior to your actual event.
