  • What Is It?

Outlook 2003 Configuration

Required:

  • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2
  • Outlook 2003 with the latest Microsoft Updates for Office.
  • Broadband Connection (Cable Modem or DSL, not dial-up modem)

There are many versions of Outlook. Verify you are using Outlook 2003 by opening the application and go to Help - About. CIS does not recommend other versions of Outlook or Outlook Express. Most students, faculty and staff can upgrade to the Outlook 2003 under terms of our license agreement with Microsoft. Please see our Software Distribution for details.

This document provides detailed instructions for configuring Outlook 2003 for use on- or off-campus. Please complete these instructions fully. Failure to do so may set your computer to download your mail from the server in which case it will be vulnerable to loss. Only items stored on the server are recoverable in the event of emergency. Prior to starting the set up, make sure your computer is connected to the internet.

How To

Configure Outlook 2003

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mail or Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Mail.
  2. Click the E-mail Accounts… button to launch the account setup wizard.

  3. Make sure that Add a new email account is selected and click Next.
  4. Select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Next.

  5. Enter spumail.spu.local into the Microsoft Exchange Server field. Clear the Use Cached Exchange Mode box. You will have the option to reenable it later.
  6. Next, enter your SPU email address into the User Name field and select Check Name. This will prompt you to log in with your full e-mail address and password. This will only work if you are currently connected to the network.
  7. Click More Settings. after verifying your username and password. Note: It might take several minutes to bring up the Microsoft Exchange Server window.
  8. In the Microsoft Exchange Server window, select the Connection tab and make sure that Connect using my Local Area Network is selected, check the Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP, and click Exchange Proxy Settings.

  9. In the Exchange Proxy Settings window, enter rpcmail.spu.edu into the first input box and make sure that Connect using SSL only is checked. Make sure that the rest of this dialog box matches what is in the following screen shot and click OK. Make sure that you select Basic Authentication from the drop down menu under Proxy Authentication Settings.

  10. Click Next and you should find yourself at the E-mail Accounts screen once again. If the screen below does not show up, press the finish button and follow the steps at the bottom to verify that messages will be delivered to your mailbox.
  11. The default setting is to deliver new mail to a personal folder. This action will remove new messages from our email server when you are logged in through Outlook. Keep new messages in your inbox on our server by changing the Deliver new e-mail to the following location: value to Mailbox - [Your Name]. and click Finish
  12. Finally, reenable Cached Exchange Mode. It was important to disable this for testing the initial setup in Step 5. When you start Outlook for future sessions, having Cached Exchange Mode enabled allows you to have access to your messages should the SPU Exchange server be unavailable. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mail or Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Mail. Click View or change existing e-mail accounts. Make sure that Microsoft Exchange Server is highlighted and click Change. Click the box next to Use Cached Exchange Mode and click Next then Finish. You computer is now set up to use Cached Exchange Mode for access offline.

*Please note that this last slide doesn't show up if this is the first account you are configuring. Users will be sent directly to a the Complete page after configuring the RPC/HTTP connection.

To verify that mail will be delivered to your mailbox on the server please do the following: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mail or Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Mail. Select E-mail Accounts then View or change Existing e-mail accounts. Make sure that the Deliver new e-mail to the following location: is set to Mailbox - Last Name, First Name.

Common Problems

We've found that the RPC over HTTP is a good solution for the majority of people who have tried it. When first using this service, please note the following:

  • The initial folder synchronization when Outlook starts up may take 5-10 minutes. This process ensures the messages in your Outlook mailbox reflect what is on our email server.
  • Cable modems, DSL, and other broadband connections can have connectivity problems due to the intensity of the RPC process. Please have patience.
  • This technology is minimally supported by CIS. We are offering RPC over HTTP as a service to the community. However, we are limited in our ability to support this technology on personally-owned systems. Our primary email access is provided through Webmail.
