Master of Arts (MA) in Theology

When you pursue a Master of Arts in Theology degree at SPU, you combine a core study of general theology with specialized study in one of five tracks: Christian Scripture, Student Ministry and Culture, Business and Applied TheologyChristian Studies, and Reconciliation and Intercultural Studies. The program focuses on the classical theological disciplines of Scripture, church history, theology, and ethics, and reflects Seattle Pacific University’s vision to engage the culture and change the world with the transforming gospel of Jesus Christ.

Benefits

The MA in Theology allows you to focus on traditional theological disciplines while at the same time integrating recent insights and methods from the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, education, psychology, business, and economics. Our goal is that you will be able to apply what you learn in each field of study to the pressing needs of the contemporary church and the postmodern world.

As an MA in Theology student, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and multicultural sensitivities you need to understand the Christian faith and put it into faithful and effective practice in a hurting world. You will also experience rich opportunities for worship, fellowship, and personal spiritual growth in the context of SPU’s evangelical Wesleyan heritage.

Requirements

The MA degree requires you to complete 78 credits, which includes a core curriculum of 42 credits. The core curriculum consists of two one-week intensive introductory courses in spiritual formation and mission, and three courses each in Bible, church history, and theology/ethics. The “capstone” of the curriculum is a 3-credit culminating seminar.

Your remaining credits will focus on Christian Scripture, Student Ministry and Culture, Business and Applied Theology, Christian Studies, or Reconciliation and Intercultural Studies, depending on which track you have chosen.
