The study abroad trip to China and India with fellow students and faculty is a major highlight of the program.  From this nearly three-week trip you’ll gain a global perspective on these important emerging economies as contexts for responsible and sustainable business. You will visit local and global businesses and social purpose organizations; engage with organizational leaders; shop; eat new foods; and visit several world heritage sites. You’ll see first-hand the need for impact-minded businesses in these exciting countries!

China

Beijing:  Beijing, the capital and economic, political, and cultural center of China, has a population well over 20 million people.  You’ll see traditional and modern areas.  You’ll visit several World Heritage sites and one of the “Wonders of the World” as you explore the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, the night market, shopping districts, and walk on The Great Wall of China!  You’ll visit world leading businesses in high-tech and other economic sectors, such as Amazon, Baidu, Lenovo, and Microsoft.  Some prior trips have included a briefing at the U.S. embassy.  You’ll learn about the importance of trade with China and the interesting geo-political nature of doing business there.

Shanghai:  Shanghai, the “New York City” of China, is a major center of finance and commerce with a mix of traditional Chinese and European history and the most amazing modern architecture.  You’ll experience the Bund river walk, the “old city” shopping district, a traditional Chinese garden, and the Oriental Pearl Tower.  Prior trips have visited a high-tech manufacturing plant, an industrial park, a telecommunications research lab, and a distribution center.

India

New Delhi:  New Delhi, the capital city, has a population of over 21 million and is a center of commerce, finance and culture as well as government.  Prior trips have included meetings with leaders in the telecommunications, computer, consumer packaged goods, petroleum, airport operations, and other industry sectors.  You’ll experience the city’s congestion and see its urban poor.  You’ll visit several World Heritage sites and another one of the “Wonders of the World” including Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, and the India Gate.  You’ll travel to Agra to see the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort.

Bangalore:  Bengalura is one of India’s high-tech centers.  It is also a social enterprise hub.  You’ll meet with several inspiring social enterprise leaders who are working to aid people at the base of the pyramid with solar power products, medical devices, handcraft jobs and training, and financial services.  Prior trips have also visited a world-class call center.  You’ll visit Bangalore Palace, a Hindu temple, and a bazaar-like shopping district with a mix of vendor stalls and retail stores.

“Challenging experiences create the biggest impact in our lives. Looking back I realize how much MASSM transformed my life. Strangers became my teammates, traveling buddies, and then my friends. Students and faculty worked together to help each of us get to the finish line. We learned about the value of businesses supporting human flourishing, a different way of doing business, especially while traveling in India and China. Another highlight was learning how to network, interview and land a job! If you are looking for an experience that will transform your life, stop looking, MAM-SSM is it!
