The Drums of War

Percussion Ensemble Director Dan Adams owns six authentic Civil War drums, half ceremonial, half showing the scars of battle. “Each has its distinct voice,” says Adams, “and produces a sound you cannot get from anything else.” Years after acquiring them, he still gets spine-tingling chills whenever they are played, especially together. Maestro Marsh Steps Down

Gerry Marsh is retiring after 15 years as a Seattle Pacific University instructor of music, and director of the music technology program at SPU. “Always an encourager and defender of those whom he called ‘the good and faithful people’ in his performing groups," says Professor of Music Eric Hanson, "he was never afraid to stand up for what is right.” Read more.

SPU Orchestra March 7; Concert Choir and Chamber Singers March 8

The SPU Orchestra will perform Thursday, March 7, 7:30 p.m., at First Free Methodist Church. The orchestra is directed by Professor of Music Eric Hanson. The repertoire includes Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2, (George Fiore, piano); and Franck's Symphony in D minor. On Friday, March 8, SPU's Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their winter concert at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The choirs are directed by Associate Professor of Music David Anderson. The concerts are free and wheelchair accessible.

On Saturday, January 26, Symphonic Wind Ensemble Director Gerry Marsh, who is retiring in the spring, was honored for his years of service to the Music Department, at a special reception following "Buon Divertimento!" — a concert at First Free Methodist Church featuring SPU’s String Quartet, Woodwind Quintet, and other small ensembles.
