NON-AFFILIATED STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

Students may use their state and federal financial aid (except Work Study), but do not receive any SPU financial aid or merit scholarships during their period abroad. You can learn more about the financial aspects of study through third party providers or direct enrollment at http://www.spu.edu/depts/sfs/studentaccounts/study_abroad .

Third Party Providers

There are many study abroad organizations and other U.S. universities that facilitate enrollment, housing, insurance and excursions at foreign universities and U.S. campuses abroad.  Transfer credit will be awarded based on an official transcript sent to SPU after program completion.  Students pay tuition, fees, room and board to the organization administering the program, not to Seattle Pacific.

You can find information about a few organizations and institutions that provide study abroad opportunities at http://www.spu.edu/acad/studyabroad/approvedprograms.html .

Follow the procedures below to ensure that you receive all necessary information related to the program and provide SPU with all the information needed from you:

  • Contact the organization through which you plan to study abroad for application procedures.
  • Schedule an appointment with your student financial services counselor to discuss financial aid implications.

Direct Enrollment

Some students choose to enroll at a foreign university independently, without participating in any study program or using a third party provider.  These students work directly with the foreign institution to register for classes and make arrangements for their own transportation, housing and insurance.  If you choose this option, it is especially important that you work closely with an undergraduate academic counselor and your faculty advisor to ensure that the institution is accredited and the courses you choose will transfer to SPU and fulfill requirements. Transfer credit will be awarded based on an official transcript sent to SPU after courses are completed.

Follow the procedures below to ensure that you receive all necessary information related to the program and provide SPU with all the information needed from you:

  • Before enrolling in the school or completing paperwork for SPU, ensure that the school you are considering is reputable and accredited by contacting Debbie Crouch, dcrouch@spu.edu, (206) 281-2446.
  • Schedule an appointment with your student financial services counselor to discuss financial aid implications.
