Student Stories

During a storm in the informal settlements, “I realized that the wind and the rain, which tend to go unnoticed at home, are reoccurring threats here, weaseling there way into these homes. Through this experience, I received a slight glimpse into the reality of living in Mfuleni, South Africa.

My prior sympathy evolved into empathy for these families; in that moment, my perspective changed… I realized that I have a charge to give to those around me—give of myself and of my possessions… a sense of empathy and a renewed sense of servanthood—two things which will hopefully stay with me for a lifetime.”

Sara Ramquist, Senior

“When playing with the kids in Mfuleni, the children taught me several hand clapping games, and after a while several kids congregated in a big circle to play a dancing game. Afterwards I was able to learn some of their names, and they tried to teach me the Xhosa clicks… these kids are not merely interested in treats or toys, but playing and being loved.

Ultimately, I feel like God taught me more through them, than I was able to offer the children in return.”

Kelsey Hoffman, Senior
