South Africa’s 20th century history has been shrouded in the turbulence of apartheid. Now that apartheid is over, SPU students can observe the healing process of a nation.- South Africa has 11 official languages, including Xhosa, Zulu, and Afrikaans.
- The country is home to nearly 48 million people.
- Students will visit the Grahamstown National Arts Festival
- SPU students also hear poets and politicians, ranging from Antjie Krog to Desmond Tutu at the Winter School in Grahamstown.
- During the study tour, the group visits five different museums and the South African Parliament, and read local newspapers to discuss current events.
- We'll see the famous Addo elephants while visiting Addo Park and see the city of Cape Town from the flat-topped Table Mountain.
- Students travel to the Khayaletshia township, where they visit an orphanage.
- A ferry will take the group to Robben Island to visit a world heritage site, reminding us of the price paid for freedom.
- We'll hike the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve
- The group takes on a Habitat for Humanity project, building houses with a local family which provides a unique opportunity to learn about South Africa
